following a system freeze and forced restart, my 540c won't start up any
longer from the hard drive (OS 7.7.5 installed). It does show the smiling
mac, but soon after I get a tree note tone, the black screen with the dead
mac under which apper the following numbers:
0000000F
00000066
The machine would start up from diskette just fine. I've run disk first
aid off the diskette and reports no problems. Then I've backed up the disk,
wiped and reformatted it and copied back the data. No improvement, also
starting up with extensions off. What to try next to revive the machine
before having to go to some degree of disassembly??

Gianfranco,
Use the AC adapter, remove the battery.
Start up from a DiskTools Floppy, since you have a backup copy of the HD, initialize the HD, but don't reinstall software, (you may have copied the corruption).

Rather, restart w/ DiskTools disk, and hold ; command - option - p - r (PRAM zap) ... 2 or 3 bong/restarts.
Then let it finish the boot.

Run DiskFirst Aid to check HD.

Install FRESH system only (not from backup), try a restart W/OUT the DiskTools floppy.

IF this works, would be best to fresh install other software if possible.

You didn't mention what may have caused the freeze/crash ?

HTH, Jerry
