Here's my one bit of PowerBook Mustang info . . . The only place I'd ever even heard of this codeword was in an eBay listing of a couple years ago where the seller described the item as a development unit codenamed "Mustang" and showed these pics: <http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/images/PB_Mustang.jpg>
Hmm. Well that's interesting. It sure does look like the 5300. The display looks a little large, though. Even the 'ce's display has a good 1/2 inch of plastic on all sides.
The brightness and contrast settings are out of place for any 5300. The 5300 has stacked buttons, not side-by-side buttons. Curious...
And then you wrote:
Sheesh, shoulda Googled _before_ last post: <http://www.cucug.org/sr/sr9603.html#MAC.1>
According to MacWeek article of 12-02-96, it looks like a 5300 with 133-MHz PowerPC 603e and 256 Kbytes of Level 2 cache. Wheeee.
The AppleDesign book has a nice picture of what looks a lot like a 5300 but is labeled as the "PowerBook 5400" (actual product decal - not a typo in the book, of which there are many). So I guess that clear it up. I'd even hazard that Apple planned on calling it the 5400. Hmm.
Still, at the time, 133 MHz and 256 KB of L2 would have been a big improvement over the already slow 5300.
Mystery solved, I guess. Now I wonder if I can acquire a "Mustang" for my growing museum of 5300s....
