A few months ago, I *thought* I had this fixed on my 5300cs by jockeying around the order of PC Card-related extension loading, but now I still get a Bus Error when starting up with the CF card installed at boot -- whether or not I am trying to use the CF card as a boot disk.

Sigh. I hope you have more luck. Please let us know if it works.

This is a thread that's a month old or so... Sorry to revive it...

Bob, did you ever find a fix for the bus error problem you were having?

I just picked up a 256MB CF card at CostCo for $50 and popped it into my 5300 w/ a copy of my OS 8.6 system folder on it. And it promptly produced a bus error.

I tried re-initializing it with my OS 9 Pismo, put it in the running 5300, and the Finder prompted me to re-initialize, saying it couldn't recognize the disk format. So... I reinitialized, copied the 8.6 folder to it, moved it to the Pismo, copied the system folder to the Pismo HD, used Drive Setup to reinitialize and write the OS 9 disk driver to the CF card, copied the 8.6 folder back, and promptly booted my 5300 just fine. Of course, the next step was to remove the 5300's hard drive, so I don't know if the system when booted from the HD would complain about the CF card being unrecognizable or not, but it works fine with the OS 9 pismo...

Peace,
Drew

Drew,

Actually, I *think* I have found a fix for my particular case.

I ran DIsk Setp on the card in an attempt to update the driver. Drive Setup told me there was a problem with the driver on the CF card. Hmmm ...

I reformatted the card on the 5300 and copied a system folder (8.1) onto it. Now I can boot with no problems.

The only thing I found to be different was that I had put a custom icon in place of the standard drive icon for the CF card. I think somehow this corrupted the driver on the card.

I also just did a drag-and-drop of the system components needed, as opposed to installing the system on the card directly. I don't know if this has any relation to the problem I was having or not.

I don't use the 5300 all that much - it's mostly a test machine to see if we can benefit from having a laptop or if we should stick with desktop machines. I'll fire it up while I'm off the next week and see if it still works.

Regards,

Bob Eye
