Is there a definitive protocol for deciding where to place which cards in my 3400c? I currently have WiFi, USB, and FireWire cards (all appropriately "cardbus shaved corner modified") If you wish to plug only one in, do you choose the upper or lower slot? When you wish to use both slots, is one more dominant or capable?
Don,
The only time it should matter is if you are using a "zoomed video" card like the IRez CapSure or DVD Decoder (which I don't think would work with anything but a G3+). (These cards write directly to the video hardware and by-pass the CPU in a sense, in case you were wondering).
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, no doubt, but I think the top slot is the only one that will work with zoomed video cards.
The determining factor is the shape of the cards. My WaveLAN card's antenna protrudes upward about 1/8" - just enough to make it impossible to use one in the bottom slot and still have good access to the top slot. I imagine any USB and FireWire cards with built-in ports are worse in this regard. Cards with "dongles" that have the ports on them might fit better when using more than one card... So if one card "sticks up," it would have to go in the top slot for you to still get access to the bottom slot...
If you want to use just one card, it probably doesn't matter which slot it's in. I'd wager, though, that true CardBus cards like the bottom slot better as there's probably a bit more of a "ground plane" there than in the top slot. That's just a guess, though. Anyone care to comment on that?
As an aside - anyone have any comments on the best price/compatibility/features/performance ratio(s) for USB and FireWire cards? I'm way too lazy and _still_ haven't picked one up for my (OT) Wallstreet...
