(OS 8.6, 40 megs RAM iirc)
I don't own a 1400, but from what I've learned on this list, Sonnet software and OS 8.6 are incompatible, causing lots of crashes.
The crashes are probably not the fault of the ORiNOCO card or software - they probably just bring out the inherent issues with 8.6.
Also, out of curiousity, why does the thing run so slowly without the extension active? I mean, the chip's still in there -- what is the extension enabling? Obviously the chip still works without the extension, but is much, much slower.
From what I understand, the extension enables the cache. Without the cache, a G3 is more or less a slightly improved 603e. And with no cache, it's really bottlenecked by the 33 MHz bus and RAM, just like the 5300 and 1400/117.
Peace, Drew
