I use my 190 with its 30gig Travelstar HD primarily to backup my
6320 and its multimedia files via serial port file sharing. Slow as the
dickens but it works (unlike my dead bow-wow $$ Orb drive). I can even play
TV captured video clips -- one as large as 200megs on my 190, which is neat
to see. So I get a full backup drive and an independent computer in the
same deal. You can't beat that kind of insurance! My HD is partitioned into
eight 3.4 gig volumes, which gets even better because I used Plus Maker on
six of the partitions (because a 190 can't [supposedly] boot of a HFS
partition).

I've been thinking of this! Has anyone heard how doable this is?

Okay, on the _main_ boot partition (not counting my 6320 "backup"
partitions and a main boot "mirror" one) of my 32meg 190 (with Ram Doubler
boosted to 64megs) I've got AppleWorks 5, iCab 2.9.7, Graphic Converter
4.1, Mariner Write 1.4.5 and Nisus 4.16, Norton 3.5.1, Techtools 3.06,
Distant Suns 5.1.4 and Starry Night 2.1.3 (great for night hikes and
camping out!), IE 4.01, OLE 4.0, Netscape Communicator 4.0.8, File Buddy,
BBEdit 4.6, Anarchie 3.6.1, ScrapIt Pro 5.5.2, Disk Warrior 2.1.1, Palm
Desktop 1.01 and Hotsync 1.01 though I mostly use Palm Buddy to sync with
my PalmIIIe. I have a 56k Zoom PCMCIA modem with a MacComCenter fax program
which is a little lame. Ironically I can use my 6320's Global Village
Platinum fax center to open fax files I made with it but alas, it doesn't
like my Zoom modem! I use FreePPP 2.6.2 to get online (less hassle than
Remote Access) which activates Vremya 2.0.2 to auto synchronize my 190's
clock to the atomic second. Then I've also other little utilities like Drop
Drawers and SpellTools and The best (as far as I know) mail program for
the 190 is Eudora Pro 3.1.3 which I have, but it doesn't open eFax tiff
faxes coming thru my e-mail without massaging by Graphic Converter.
However, I find myself using Eudora 3.1.3 even over 5.1 on my 6320 because
it's a lot faster and doesn't pop up up that irritating ads window (you
don't really miss anything from 5.1 except for that online spelling check,
but hey, Spellwell works good enough for me!). My 190 can also do the
character recognition thing nicely with READ-IT! O.C.R. 6.0, but the
novelty wears quick for me right now. iCab is still quirky at times and
sometimes doesn't render pages right, so you have to hold on to IE, even an
ancient 4.01 version. Lately OE has been balking at logging in for e-mail
so I don't what's up going on there. Communicator is a workable
browser/email and grouplist backup. Because Norton 3.5.1 hates HFS on
68k's, I use First Aid 8.2 and for tough jobs Techtools (always keep on
"Protection" mode!) My control strip is packed to the gills thanks to CSM
Maker 1.5 and Jeremy's plug-ins.
All told, I can do about over 90+% of anything on 6320 on my 190
which is great peace of mind if anything catastrophic ever happened to my
6320 (BTW, although the 6320 is much maligned as a "Road Apple," I still
think I got a damn good value from it even over the 6400 I passed up when I
bought it at J&R in 1995. The installed TV and video capture card that came
with it were invaluable for composing my web page and other multimedia
goodies, not to mention choice cuts from movies and TV shows -- all which I
could view on my 190.) Although my 6320's Avid Videoshop won't work on my
190, I do have QT MoviePlayer 2.5 which does allow some limited video
editing (before Apple wised-up and killed the feature in following
versions).
So I assume that I've the max 68k versions of all the software
loaded my 190. The only things I could ask for is cheap PPC upgrade card, a
way to top off my 32meg RAM to 48 without losing money dumping a 16meg
card, and a SCSII serial cable to dump slow-poke serial file sharing
backups (I don't want a new old PB -- this one's sentimental so I just want
to soup it up, not replace it). If there was a way to use the 190's IR port
to Hotsync with my Palm's that'd be awesome as well. My main concerns are
the lifetime of the 190cs's display screen and my nicked touchpad, which I
"patched" with a sliver of Scotch tape. Also the lid creaks horribly with
stiff resistance when it's moved (which I seldom do now), but if I take it
to TekServe in Manhattan for service they might charge me an arm and a leg.
All that said, you know, I think ex-Amiga people like me appreciate
what the Mac's capable of and not better than folks who've never known
Amigas! I mean I still smile at how people go gaa-gaa over OS-X at MacWorld
when it all almost feels "old fashioned" to me! I still don't understand
(then I do) why someone couldn't have churned out a truly multi-tasking
multi-screen (with CLI functionality) multimedia alternate OS for Macs WAY
before OS-X when the Amiga was doing all that and more on _6800_ machines
back in '85! Imagine a PB 100 with 95% of OS-X's powers! I mean, who'd need
Windows or even Linix for that matter! Had Jobs been less jealous and
ripped Amy some, the story of Mac's market penetration would've been a
hell'va lot different! Maybe a nice project for a hacker would be porting
an early Amiga DOS to 68k Macs. Sigh! But I digress...
