That's the hardware you will need, I think the only software you need is the
cd-roms extension, which should be installed already.

You can find little SCSI Apple external drives cheaply many places that sell used stuff, try ebay and your local 2nd hand shops too.

Rather than a comparatively expensive HD30 cable, you can get a $10 hardware adapter (datamemorysystems.com used to have them in "clearance") and use a regular SCSI cable.

Easiest and cheapest way to go for CD drives on the 5300 is an old external Apple 600i? or similar, 3rd party ones can be a pain to support. Internal Apple ones exist but are pricey and fragile.

Yes, you could do that. Or you could do this: <http://www.alksoft.com/projects/images/5300_CD-ROM_medresqual.jpg>

*Grin*

That's a 5300 (greyscale) motherboard and associated parts booted of a beige G3's Mac OS 8.1 install CD spinning in a PowerBook G3's expansion bay CD-ROM drive.

There's also a blue drive activity LED hooked up to the hard drive, but you can't really see it in this picture (the wires are wrapped in blue electrical tape).

Tee hee. :-D

Peace,
Drew
