I sort of recall some previous postings on this topic but cannot find the
reference.

We have been trying to upgrade several powerbooks recently and were lucky
enough to acquire an original Apple IDE - SCSI adapter as supplied with
their old 1GB SCSI drives. (We bought a IGB SCSI drive and the adapter of
course came with it).
So we did a bit of experimenting. First we tried it on genuine Apple
ATI/IDE drives - and it worked with all of them up to our maximum test of
4GB.
The we tried them with IBM IDE drives as somewhere I had heard they would
only work with Apple branded drives? Well, they work with IBM drives AOK
again we tested up to 4GB (theyll probably go much higher?)
So we converted an old 540C with 250mb SCSI drive into a slightly larger
machine with an adapted 4GB hard drive!and a PowerMac daughtercard up to
117MHz. It roars.
Now we are seriously looking for more 1GB Apple SCSI drives (just for their
adapters)to upgrade and recycle some more machines, but, hey, if you own a
Powerbook and are limited only by drive size this is the route to try out.
One small word of caution- the connectors are a tiny bit fragile so great
care is needed in the swap-over.
Where's the limit? Well, we will post our findings as soon as we test out a
40GB HD coming soon!
