I have a PowerBook 1400cs, 117Mhz, 48MB RAM, 750MB HD, and I tried to install the System 7.5.3 that Apple offers. I had Mac OS 8.6 installed and that was too slow. Loading webpages was slower than my Performa 460 with 33Mhz and 36MB RAM. But I tried the System 7 installer and it didn't recognize the Mac. I called Apple support, but obviously, they couldn't help me. Anyone know how to put System 7 on this thing?
The Apple Spec Database shows the original OS for the 1400cs/117 as 7.5.3 with the PowerBook 1400 Enabler. I don't know for sure about using the enabler. I think that the original installer for this model had a specialized version of the OS 7.5.3 installer. It would probably be modified to recognize the 1400 and to install the enabler along with OS 7.5.3. This was commonly done when a machine came out after an OS release as opposed to those machines that were released concurrent with the OS.
I'm not certain how you would proceed. My best guess is that you need to download the PB1400 enabler from Apple and add it to your installer boot system and also install it on your 1400s HD.
