The "circle M" protects the microcode (firmware, in most cases). The "circle C" protects the overall chip. If Apple bought the microcontroller "macro", then there could be no "circle C" for the microcontroller, as the license includes unlimited reproduction rights, and, at that point, the microcontroller is not separable from the Apple logic, anyway. Nearly every microcontroller from a 4-bit to a 32-bit is available this way. The most popular imbedded micrcontroller may be the (Zilog) Z80, but the (Intel) 386 is also seen in imbedded applications.
