Hi Wayne,
My 1400 has the same problem; I'm not sure whether it's a dodgy keyboard or
whether I'm just not used to using it, but it seems that it only works about
2/3 of the time, so perhaps it's a problem with this model.
I haven't taken it apart, but if it's like a regular (desktop) keyboard, the
space bar has a metal rod hooked under a pair of brackets that hold it in
place (as Malcolm said).  For my desktop keyboard I use a long, thin and
(importantly) blunt instrument - like a butter knife - to prise up one of
the long sides, then wiggle it out from there.  Like I said, though, I
haven't tried taking mine apart so the mechinism could be different.
