I was messing around with a 5300ce earlier today, and when I changed the display from 256 colors to thousands of colors, the screen just went into a light gray mode. Adjusting the brightness and contrast didn't do anything, so I did a restart. Then I got a checkerboard pattern, which also happened when I started up with a floppy. Any hope, or is the cable shot?

Try zapping the PRAM to see if you can get it back to 256 colors.
