Hi folks
I recently picked up an old Powerbook 5300, which I want to use for a few basic tasks such as web browsing and delivering small presentations. I have just managed to install OS9.0 (via a very convoluted route as the 5300 has no CD-ROM of course) and every large application I try to run (IE4.5, outlook, Netscape, Powerpoint, iTunes, etc) drops out immediately with (usually) a Type 2 error.
As these errors are occurring all the time, and even following a completely clean install, I'm assuming it's not something simple such as an extension conflict. The "Type 2" suggests to me that the memory may be at fault (also why larger, more memory intensive apps cause the problem).
Has anybody else had any issues with the RAM boards in these machines? For the record, it's a 32MB unit (with 8MB on the motherboard). I was hoping to get some ideas before I dump the RAM board or the whole laptop (as it's essentially useless to me at the moment).
For starters try upgrading to OS 9.1. I had OS 9.1 on my PB 5300. I eventually scaled back to OS 8.6 as it's faster. Mine had a 48Mb RAM card. I didn't have any significant problem with programs crashing etc.
Also try running Disk First Aid on it. -- -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting
