Hmm... I assume that you card reader is a standard USB Storage Device.
If so, the 8.6 USB stack may not come with a driver, but ISTR that there
is a generic one (possibly part of an Apple Developer library) which can
be installed.

I'd try searching on "USB Storage" in the relevant software and Apple
developer searches.
