You need to go into your monitor settings and change the prefs to the
external display. or turn on the video mirror then both the displays will be
the same, and if it is just the size you needed for viewing then both
displays being the same will not matter, or if you need more screen space
set the external display as the start up monitor. whenever you disconnect
the monitor the mac will just revert back to the built in display.
