As a student I thought I'd chime in. First of all, keep in mind the types of
computers used mainly on campus. If they have a decent amount of apple's on campus,
he'd be good with it. If they don't, however, he might have some trouble. I say this
because as a mac user I attend a school which is predominantly PC, and I've had
teacher's that will simply not accept files from students using macs because they use
a pC and their understandiing of computers is too limited to accept anything but what
their most basic understanding allows. Also, sometimes they can just simply be
prejudiced. Furthermore, the college may make little to no effort to allow mac users
to interface with their network. Right now I'm still in the process of finding out
whether my computer will work on their wireless network here at school.
If a mac is feasible, then processor speed has little effect on how well he will be
able to do what he needs to. The most important thing is a very basic question: will
it run the most current version of word processors, CDs that come with courses, etc
etc? If not, this is the biggest problem. Basically, if has older versions of MS
Office, etc. he'll be able to work through most humanites type courses, but the more
technical ones he'll be screwed.
