Excellent advice.
I got a replacement motherboard and the clip for the
tracker/clicker ribbon is missing. External kb and
mouse work fine. Is there a good way of inserting the
ribbon? Attempts so far have resulted in some damage
to the ribbon. I will try a thin piece of plastic as a
shim.
If that fails, do I need an entire clicker/trackpad
assembly or just the ribbon?
George

This probably is off-target as I can't remember what that bit is like, but are you aware that normally with these things you need to pull up part of the socket by about a millimter before you can insert the ribbon? (Apologies if I've misunderstood the problem!)

A paperclip with the last 2mm bent in a vise at 90 degress is the perfect tool for this. You need to pull up at the corner at each end of the ribbon-socket.
