So, please let's talk Telnet. Anyone? Many thanks George
telnetd? for the 3400? Basically you can buy unix for it... that really expensive Apache/proxy server for OS 8.6? 9? might have a telnetd. I forget the name of the util but it was nice and about $300, if slow. And telnet won't let you view files, or copy files down. So it really would not help even if you could run a telnet server.
One thing will help: are you only trying to dial directly into the 3400, or is it possible to have the 3400 dial your ISP and be online that way?I missed it if you said...
I thought about it some more and there's more workarounds but you HAVE to be using PPP: there's an old util called #### (I can't recall, it was never well known, had a short demo, was $80) from back a ways. I used it on a SE/30 with 7.5.5, it *might* work on 8.6. It was a webserver plus some extras, for file management, starting/stopping running apps, that sort of thing. With this running on the 3400, you could copy files off the 3400 (or maybe not. I know you could upload stuff...) You connect to it with any web browser. If you google you will maybe find some info but the company has been incommunicado about it for years. And I really am blanking on the name, but could dig it up. Anyone remember? The splash screen was a nice beach, the line was you could remote admin your server from nice places :) You could config the port to serve from so hopefully your provider would not be blocking port 8080 or whatever over dialup, though.
Or you could use Netpresenz, the old ftpd, it works fine for light use. But again, the 3400 would have to be up via PPP (calling in to an ISP), and you'd have to be able to figure out its IP in the modem pool. But this would let you ftpd down any files, and delete files. No control of processes though. If you can't find the working NetPresenz, I have it somewhere. I don't think it's available anymore. And this is assuming they are not blocking port 21...
Or you could look into an old version of Carrocho server for 8.6, and connect to your 3400 with Carrocho client on your home machine. again, port blocking would be a potential issue...
OR, if you really want to call into your 3400, perhaps try and find some old BBS software for the Mac? If you call in as owner of the BBS you should be able to delete files, and BBS's were all about zmodem :) (this would let you download files easily). All you would need is any terminal program (like HyperTerm on a PC, or whatever the equivalent is on a Mac). Setting up a BBS could be a bit of work, though, and it could be processor intensive. I don't know anything about BBS's for the mac, in that era I had an 030 Amiga (and I put a BBS up on it, too :)
HTH. Given the restrictions, it seems a bit hard to do what you want to accomplish.
