Ouch! I just grabbed my (sleeping?!?!) 1400 to check the benchmarking results of a Viper 340mb PC card drive . . .
Wow, the whole base is burning hot! It's been sleeping (?) for at least a week hooked to a PS. The battery isn't very hot, but the heatsink is waaay too hot to touch, it's scorching hot!! I didn't notice if the sleep light was on prior to opening the lid, but I'm thinking it wasn't. I'm sure it didn't help whatever happened that it was inside a stack of other 'Books.
I'm thinking I had a similar problem before, but can't recall now if it was with this processor or with a 183.
Anyone have any insights?

Air flow !
Heat kills chips. This can't be good. Even my 166 MHz 1400 gets pretty hot.
On a laptop it's not practical to drill cooling holes or add fans like in a DT.
So I wouldn't stack anything on mine with it running or sleeping. and I wouldn't lay it on a soft surface either.
Air can flow a little underneath when it's omn a hard surface.
They used to sell a set of support legs to get more air flow underneath lappers also.
The benchmarking task seems to have really warmed up your CPU
If I stacked the 1400 on top of my firewire hard drive I could make grilled cheese sandwiches in between them !
