If you want to install a Systerm Folder to boot off of, just get a CF-to-PCMCIA adapter for that CompactFlash card and plug it directly into a PCMCIA slot on the 3400. Format the CF card as a Mac volume and install the system on it.
I'm doing this right now. OS 8.6 on a 128Mb CF card. I also have a wireless card plugged in. The CF also has Internet Explorer and FileMaker Pro on it. I guess I need to remind myself that this little bitty card is four times the size of the first HD I had connected to my Mac Plus.
I doubt that there is any way you could get a 3400 to boot off a USB device, or even install a system on one. I've tried a lot with my 3400, but never that. Has anyone on here attempted it?
No reason it should work. The boot ROM doesn't know squat about a USB card. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting
