Hi Andrew. Lets see if I can answer your questions. Question 1:
>Do I understand correctly that I can only do this with 2 system folders? >That might be a little much for my Dad (the eventual user of this 1400). >I haven't installed either network card (Farallon internal Ethernet or >YDL/Orinoco PC card wireless) so all mistakes are open to me. Answer 1: Yes you need two System Folders. However the way the Mac works, you will need two partitions,(hard drive or compact flash) with a System Folder on each, if you want both Wired and Wireless Ethernet. Having two System Folders on the same partition will confuse the Mac. Name one of the partitions Wireless, that should help your dad. You should show him how to use the Start UP control panel. Just put a alias to it on his desktop. Or it might be easier to get a Graphite Base Station and just set him up on wireless all the time. Then you don't need any partitions. They are fairly cheep now. Question 2: >> If you have already installed software for a Internal or PCMCIA Ethernet >> card, you will have to do a Clean Install of the OS to get the wireless >> card to work. On PowerBooks that support Card & Socket Services 2 (the >> 190,1400, 5300 and perhaps the 500 series) they will only support one >> alternate network at a time. The wireless software installer writes data to >> the System File (modifies the System File). If you do a Update of the OS, >> this data is preserved (or supose to be). This is why you have to do a >> Clean Install when you have wired Ethernet already on the PowerBook. > >This sounds like either ethernet adapter (Farallon internal Ethernet or >YDL/Orinoco PC card wireless) will modify the system folder in such a >way as to prevent the other adapter from working. >Does anyone know what gets changed in the system folder? >If it's as simple as extensions and control panels then extension >manager should be able to handle it. I must be missing something. >Maybe I'll have to poke around Location manager to see if it can change >the extension set and TCP/IP files to work with either. Answer 2: Its not so much as what is installed in the System Folder, its the Modification of the System File. Items can be droped into the Extension and Control panel folder, but they wont work on this model of PowerBook. In order to make Wired or Wireless work on this computer, the installer must be run. As this computer did not have built in Ethernet, a small piece of code is added to the System File. The Asante Tech Support people filled me in to this fact. That is why I could not get their card to work, when I had previously installed the Farallon drivers for a PCMCIA Ethernet card. Remember how you used the Font DA Mover? Well when you did that, you added code to the System File. That's what the Wireless or Wired installer does. You should note that if you read the Orinoco Instlation Report, it list the extensions installed and where, but does not list it modified the System File. Here is what gets installed, and where: Orinoco Test Disk :Desktop Folder:ORiNOCO Report Orinoco Test Disk :Desktop Folder:ORiNOCO License Orinoco Test Disk :System Folder:Control Panels:ORiNOCO Orinoco Test Disk :System Folder:Extensions:ORiNOCO ASC Orinoco Test Disk :System Folder:Extensions:ORiNOCO Driver (Set for Pre-PCI use) Orinoco Test Disk :System Folder:Extensions:ORiNOCO Lib Orinoco Test Disk :System Folder:Extensions:ORiNOCO Monitor Orinoco Test Disk :System Folder:Control Strip Modules:ORiNOCO Orinoco Test Disk :System Folder:Extensions:Location Manager Modules:ORiNOCO Orinoco Test Disk :System Folder:Extensions:Modem Scripts:ORiNOCO Script Report Complete. If you have previously installed a older version of wireless software, then that will keep the Orinoco v7.2 from installing correctly. Based on my experience, and with the recomondation of Asante Tech Support, most installation problems can be solved with a Clean Install of the OS. Question 3: >> Instead of using a Compact Flash card to be a start up disk, you could >> partition the hard disk to allow two System Folders, and use the Start Up >> Disk Control Panel to choose between the two. Install wireless software on >> one, and the wired software on the other. > >This might be an option since the 1400 in question has a 20 Gb hard >drive. However I'd have to figure out how to partition the drive. >I'm guessing FDISK won't work.... Answer 3: Use Apple Drive Set Up that came with your OS 8.6 install. It should let you set up the partitions. Its one of the options under the Functions Menu. Be sure to back up your data before you do.
