Do you have the Wamcom build of Mozilla 1.3.1?
<http://www.wamcom.org/>
I'm not clever enough to compile and patch open source stuff but looking at the web site makes me think that they had to tinker with 1.3.1 to get it to run with 8.6.
Define "tinker". :)
OpenSource projects are written fairly generically. Then they fork as specific support for each OS is added.
What they did to create WaMCom Moz 1.3.1 was take the Mac OS 8/9 specific support from the prior build, update it as necessary, then use it to build the new (at the time) 1.3.1.
The same technique could be used one the latest Moz builds, IF someone(s) were willing to volunteer their time and know-how to do it.
That's simply how open-source works.
