Also I've just managed to load OS 8.6 on to the PB540C successfully thanks to a website at http://seth.mattinen.org which was full of really useful tips.
Another good resource for installing Mac OS 8.5-9.1 on unsupported PPC-upgraded 68k-based Macs can be found at Dan K's site:

(The over vigilant anti-spam programme wiped Andrew's message before I read it , so Andrew could you possibly send again please!)
What I had written previously follows...
Found some absolutely invaluable help on the web too. And its probably Andrew's? (AlkSoft Installing Airport on unsupported Powerbooks) Worked a treat on the 5300.
Yep, AlkSoft.com is my site.
Peace, Drew

I have Graphite Airport base station but I cannot get into to it to reset its controls. I have been told that you need an ethernet cable (not radio) connection to set the AirPort base station up. This is possible as I can use an ethernet RJ45 cable from the Desktop 7600 - BUT I cannot load the Airport set-up programmes on to the 7600 despite its running OS 9.0.4 which is stated as the minimum to operate with.
Try this: <http://edge.mcs.drexel.edu/GICL/people/sevy/airport/#Configurator>
It's a Java app that will do most of what AirPort Admin Utility would do, and it will run on any platform that can run Java.
AirPort Admin Utility shouldn't require an AirPort capable Mac - any Mac with an ethernet port ought to work. The problem you are having (a quit with a Type 2 error) sounds more like an OS problem - you've got a different problem causing the software to crash.
