The real reason is the 1400 is a NuBus-based machine, while the
2400/3400/3500 are PCI bus-based machines, and the chip sets which are
used in the Cardbus card gages are all PCI bus-based. None are
NuBus-based.

1) The 2400/3400/3500 is 16/32 bit-capable, largely because of the 16/32
bit-capable TI "bridge" chip, but the 2400/3400/3500 have a 16 bit-only
card cage. If that card cage is modified to accept 32-bit cards, it will
work in 16 bit and 32 bit modes, although the shielding normally found in
later 32 bit cages won't be there. (Early 32 bit cards didn't have
provisions for that shielding, either).

2) The 1400 us 16 bit-capable, only. It has a 16 bit-only card cage. Even
if that card cage were to be modified to accept 32 bit cards, it would
not work because of the 16 bit "bridge" chip.
