I started naming the computers and HDs after I got my second Mac (a new IIsi). I use military aircraft names. Workstations are named after fighters and servers after bomber/attack aircraft. Mac vintage parallels aircraft vintage (more or less). Thus my first Mac is named Sopwith and that IIsi is Mustang. My old 7500 desktop is Eagle and this iBook is Raptor. My file server started out as a IIsi called Liberator and has moved up through a IIci, Centris 650, WGS 80, PM7500 and is now a 8550. The name has stayed Liberator as I wanted to avoid confusion among the family. The two clones I have have the names of British planes and certain OTHER computers I have are named after German or Soviet planes, depending on vintage.

I name the harddisks with the computer name followed by " HD". I do this to avoid having two or more server volumes on the desktop all named "Macintosh HD". Machines running OS X that require the 8Gb first partition have HD partitions called "Machine Name Boot" and Machine Name HD".
