Dear Martin,

I checked at the Everymac site, and it says that all G3 ibooks can run a version of OS 9, with the newest being 9.2.2; all the G4 ibooks run only OS X versions. Here's the list page (sorted by processor speed):
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/
You click on the model you have, then look in the table for 'supported Mac OS'

About updating, or actually 'downdating' firmware I don't know. If you post your exact model, I'm sure other members can advise you whether you need OS 9, or if OS X will run fast enough.

Greetings,

Ge'
