Thanks for the response. I know what you mean, but unless the PC card is in the card slot, that option does not appear in the menu anyway. I have just plain "ethernet" selected.

One other clue, and, being a newbie on OSX I didn't know to check it, is in the Network Preference panel, in "Show -> Network Status" It tells me that the cable for Built-in Ethernet is not plugged in". I suppose that, seeing that it IS plugged in, means that it is not receiving a signal from the 5300 for some reason. Now, I did check the crossover cable between the Pismo and a TiBook and it functioned normally. As for the ethernet function of the PC card on the 5300, I was able to connect to the internet using my workplace ethernet network; so I know that works. (work, work, work) Why it would then turn around and pretend to be "not plugged in" is beyond me. I may post this problem to the G-books list next...

Hi Dan
some one else pipe up if i am wrong here but i think you need to set the pismo just to ethernet in the appletalk window. The 5300 is set to alt ethernet because it is using the card and has no built in ethernet, but the pismo does and it sounds like you have them both set the same ! So the pismo is looking for the card that is not there and not the real ethernet port.
