>Is it possible to replace the hard drive in a PowerBook 520?

It is a SCSI 2.5" HD, so your choices will be very limited.

Forget the awful 20 and 40 MB Conner drives.

The Quantum 80 and 160 MB drives are OK, but they are only marginally
better than the Conners.

The best are probably IBMs, in 250 and 500 MB sizes.

Also good are so-called "converted" IDE drives, usually employing an ADTX
IDE-to-SCSI converter. Usually found in 1 GB and 1.4 GB sizes.

Recently, I found some converted drives in 2 GB sizes.

The maximum size an ADTX converter can accept is 8 GB, and the drive must
be a "thin" one, with the older mounting hole pattern, as the combination
of a "thin" drive and the ADTX converter is as thick as a "thick" drive.

The best solution would probably be a 500 MB IBM, as these were made in
large enough quantities, for Apple and for others, so as to be relatively
easy to find.

Be aware that some ADTX-converted drives will NOT be recognized by Drive
Setup.

The ones by Microtech won't be.

The ones by FSP (whoever they are) will be.
