I don't want to sound like an advertisment, but I cover all of these points, except not really any focus on Ram Doubler other than to mention it exists, in my PowerBook 1400 FAQ. The FAQ is free to read online, and can be found here:

In short,

-using Compact flash cards

Very good idea. I do this - runs completely silently and doesn't seem any slower than hard disk.

-using a ram disk

Not worth the effort. Instead, get a fast compact flash card and boot off that

-using OS 8.6, 9 (.1 and 2.2) and OS X (maybe somebody got this far...)

8.6 is great. I use 9.1. 9.2.2 is the same as 9.1, but with some extra code to allow more recent machines to run it. OS X - currently impossible

-Linux based OS'

Not a good idea due to the Nubus architecture. Nothing really works, at least nothing other than ancient mklinux.

-External batteries

Best bet is to recondition an existing battery, and then run off a CF card as you will use a lot less power. I get 1.5-2 hours doing this.

-Ram Doubler

Good if you can get it, but really, the built in virtual memory is fine.

-any other extremely cool things one can do, without knowing it. (besides
Wifiying, please)

You can add a G3 card (I did), empty out an old dead battery and use it as a space saving module in the CD drive slot, you can go wifi (which you don't want to) and broadband, get Mozilla (WaMCom), and so on.
