Great to get help from all sides!

Howard sent me a shareware program: FastUnfrag, size: unbelievable 12k,
which works nicely and tells me that I have only 1% fragmentation.
Which means that the problem with the slow startup is not caused by
fragmentation...

Re. what Bill wrote about defragmentation and OS 8: Yes, be careful
there. IIRC, up to OS 8.0 the file system was HFS. Then came the quite
different HFS+, which makes older defragmenting programs (and disk tools
in general) potentially dangerous on disks that have been used with OS
8.1 or newer.

That said, I'm still looking if anyone can give me a good hint about my
PB's slow startup.
The suggestion with the servers list sounded good--if only I could find
that file or folder. On the other hand, I never log on to servers, but
only use the network for connecting to the internet--would that generate
a list of server names, too?

Any ideas welcome!
