Yours is a straight through problem. Simple, really. Are you on yet?
Have you installed Open Transport (the mac networking bits) if so, what version?
With 7 that's all you really need. Most docks were, as you thought, straight plug & play.
Seems to me as long as you have the comm software installed & configured, it'll take care of itself once all the hardware connections are made. 7.6.1 has a more sophisticated transport system, or 7.5.5., more so than 7.0 or 7.1. Were I you, I'd opt for that install.
