How do I recharge it if it isn't dead?

You don't. You buy a new one.

Sorry, but there it it. When the battery starts to die, the computer starts acting wonky. How the battery is dying is that it won't hold a charge. Or holds less & less. It takes time for it to croak, making it all that much more inconvenient, and the only thing for it is replacement, which, admittedly, is also inconvenient in PowerBooks. But worth it, for you'll probably never have to buy another one, and your computer will run. Like new.
