Doc,

I for one have done a lot of buying and selling on Craigslist. When I once came into a deal on about 50 new laptop drives, I sold about half of them on CL San Francisco, another quarter to CL LA & Portland. The rest went on the swap list. I've never been taken once on those or many of the other sales. HOWEVER... I've come close a few times.

As far as selling goes, one of the biggest scams comes from those who have a client who wants one or more of your items. They say they will pay up front with Cashiers Check or even Money Order and will provide payment at time of pickup. The written english is often broken. If selling, stay away.

As for buying, most sellers are ok. There were a few buyers who had normal apprehension about buying from me so I provided them with a few referrals in say the Bay Area who had also just bought and received one of the drives. This is one method to protect yourself. Ask if he has any referrals. Also read down the column because if there are any repetitive scammers, the other users will often point them out.

Make sure that you purchase, make sure to request some form of tracking number. It protects both sides and nobody can say "must have gotten 'lost' in the mail".

Finally, read the Paypal 'Buyers Protection' section. They give some good insights and means to protect you. Of course the average seller is as apprehensive about you as you are of them. Of course Face to Face exchanges are best but understandably difficult in Western Montana. Overall, CL is a great service.

Got my Lombard on CL, although a local buy.

Just a few thoughts.

Dave
