<I have a dilemma. I've started using my 190 for web browsing, lately,
but I've been using Netscape 2.0, because iCab is so slow. Does anyone
know how to make iCab faster, so I don't have to get bombarded with
error messages in Netscape. I'm running 7.5.2, and I have 8 MB of RAM,
and 32 MB of Virtual Memory, with a 1024K cache, if that's any help.>

Wow, my 190 came with Netscape 2.0 (and 7.5.2) on it (also 8 MB RAM). In
my experience, Netscape 2 was such a dog -- I'm surprised you can use it
at ALL, truth be told. It used to freeze up and crash MY 190 practically
every time I tried to surf with it, usually within thirty seconds to a
minute after I opened it. Yes, iCab was also slow on my 190 (and it's
only marginally better on my 5300c, though it's very good -- my primary
browser in fact -- on my G3), but at least it didn't freeze and crash the
190, and for what small amount of browsing I do on a Powerbook anyway, it
was good enough. Anyway.....a couple of minor improvements I made on my
190 might help you, too. I found them to noticeably boost both general
performance as well as browsing in particular.

1. Upgrade to 7.5.5. The "path" is 7.5.2 to 7.5.3 to 7.5.5. Free from
Apple -- all you need is floppies.

2. Install RAMDoubler 2 if you can. (I'd had that from my old Performa
475 days, and as it happened, my boyfriend also had a floppy of it too).

My horrible experience with Netscape 2.0 not only drove me into the arms
of iCab, but led me to delete 2.0 from my 190 (why use up HD space on an
app that crashes the system, right?). Powerbook Listers had suggested I
try Netscape 3.0.4 Gold as an alternative to 2.0 but that wasn't any
better (for me, anyway) than 2.0 was. In fact, it was worse -- it
wouldn't even open without crashing the system! Hahaha. But maybe it'll
work for you, seeing that you can use 2.0.

I'm also thinking that perhaps RAM might be a factor for you. I've
noticed that the more RAM I have, the faster the browsing gets. If you
can find RAMDoubler or afford to put more actual RAM in your 190, again,
improved overall performance and browsing capability in particular will
be the result.

One more thing that's also important for internet usage, which you didn't
mention -- how fast is the modem you're using on your 190? If you're
using a 56K modem, in my opinion you've done everything you can short of
OS and RAM upgrading. If you're not at 56K, I can only suggest you try to
get up there if browsing speed is important to you.

Good luck!
