I get thia too on OS 8.6, the screen stayes grey with the pointer there and the HD is spinning however I do not know what this means, your best bet is to make sure not to have any programs running (except the Finder and some programs that take up little memory) becasue to wake up from sleep mode it takes a lot of memory.
