Personally, I have never had much luck with Netgear stuff.
I just got a used WaveLan Silver card off Ebay that works like a charm
in my 1400 with OS 8.6 using an Airport Extreme station.

I was curious about that also but for about $150 you can get a G3 Powerbook.
I choose to get the G3 instead of messing with it.
