I have OS 8.1 installed on it and it replaces the hard drive on my machine. Although I haven't physically removed the HD, some do for weight considerations. I have an extra battery in the peripherals bay--no floppy or CD-ROM drive--to reduce the frequency of having to spin down the HD as the machine "looks" for a floppy or CD-ROM drive from time to time. I have OS 9.1 installed on the HD in case I ever need to use it and I store some archived installation and document files there as well. It's very simple to use really. Once formatted, it acts like any other volume. And, it does conserve battery power. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably buy a 1 gig CF card for the extra storage capacity.
