Unplug your PB, take the battery out, then use something to gently wedge open the pcmcia slot doors; then shine a penlight into the opening. You should be able to see if the pins are bent over. If they are I'd disassemble the Powerbook, then gently straighten them with a pair of fine needle nose pliers or fine-tip hemostats.

It's not a job for the twitchy or non-dextrous, but it is doable. Something like this <http://tinyurl.com/7kbsk> helps a great deal, and adds that Rick Moranis-like total geek chic to your wardrobe ;-)

The bad news is that if THAT was why you got the crackling noise and smoke smell from the PB, something on the logic board was doing the crackling and smelling.
