this sounds like a similar thing that just happened to my  powermac after
i'd put a lot more RAM in ~ in my case  had to use the power key to restart
after the intital startup ,
turned out the PRAM needed to be zapped ,
i'd tried  keyboard startup PRAM zap ~   but to no avail as the problem was
still there ,
then i tried version 3 of tech tool lite instead of the verson 1.04 i've
got already ~ hey presto i zapped the PRAM with TTL 3  and it cured things
!,
