Yes...changes in the tone, volume and duration are the determining factors. >From my own experiences.... Western Digital drives have to be the noisiest. Seagates are somewhere in between. Maxtors I think are the best. But I will tell you this...next time you have an old drive your not needing anymore, take off the cover and then boot it up.. Now that's noisy!!!
