I have a similiar(spinning HDD when I don't want it to) problem when
doing the same thing with all of the powerbooks I have owned (three
5300's, a 3400 and currently a Kanga). The workaround I have found for
the spinning hard drive is to use the control strip to spin down the
hard drive, then drag the drive to the trash. This doesn't delete
anything on the drive, and the hard drive no longer spins after that (I
have been able to get around 9 hours of battery life on a single charge
this way)
