Using VM is up to the user--I never have used it, but I've been lucky enough to have had enough memory for my applications. I suppose had I had my 520c for example, with only the original 8mg vs the 36 that I ended up with (36? I think that was the amount), I would have turned VM on.

A synopsis of the Sandisk white paper is on Rich Dreher's CFFA website: http://dreher.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=15

It shows that the # of writes to the CF while very high, isn't infinite. (Personally, as I said, I'd only worry about it if I were using it as VM--each block write is counted. Otherwise as just a startup device, while using the HD for storage, I think you'll be ok.)
