OK, I decided to turn off Virtual Memory. I notice the System and apps are drawing more resources (particularly the System which has jumped by almost 10MB with most of my apps open). <snip> What likely candidate control panels and extensions can I turn-off in the System to try to regain some RAM?

For example, if I'm no longer messing around with Appearance, General Controls, keyboard, numbers, etc., etc. can I turn these off? As for extensions, I've already turned off QuickDraw 3D, but what about MPEG Extension, Musical Instruments, PowerPlug and VR in QuickTime 5.0.2, etc.? Also, are installed Fonts actually using RAM, or only storage space for apps like Word? And what about all the Microsoft extensions (eek!)? I know the answer depends on what apps I actually use, but if there are some obvious RAM hogs I can turn off that is what I'm after.

I wouldn't mess with Appearance, General Controls, or any other CP you think you *MAY* want to access sooner or later. When trimming an OS for size I always trash DialAssist, ColorSync, Keyboard, Launcher, Location Manager, Map, Mouse, Numbers, Text, and a couple others I can't remember at the moment.

As for extensions, I don't touch QuickDraw or QuickTime (except possibly QT VR), but you can safely trash ColorSync, all graphics accelerator extensions (such as ATI, etc), all Game Sprockets and Open GL files, all modem scripts, all printer profiles and LaserWriter and StyleWriter drivers (except for any you might actually use, of course), Location Manager Modules, Multiprocessing folder, and a few others I can't remember at the moment. If you can find alternatives to all things Microsoft, do so and trash all those extensions. But if you use Word and/or IE you could mess yourself up by doing so....

I second what Howard says about RAM Doubler -- a much better choice than VM. Still, if I had a high speed CF boot drive I'd be tempted to use VM mapped to that. I wouldn't worry about "using up" the CF card's finite life span; I think we're talking years of steady use before possible failure.
