Did you format the drive as HFS or HFS+? It sounds like you are using
regular HFS, which isn't worth using on drives larger than 1GB. HFS+
makes much better use of drive space.
This relates to the earlier discussion about Alsoft's PlusMaker. It
would definitely be worth your while to give PlusMaker a try to convert
your drive to HFS+.
