Bud,
Indeed, Apple's CD-ROM 5.3.1 driver, which came with OS 7.6, was intended to
work with third-party SCSI drives.
Apple itself remarks on the matter in Technote 1096:
"Previously, version 5.3.1 of the Apple CD-ROM driver tried to handle all
SCSI CD-ROM drives, regardless of whether the drive already had an existing
driver supporting it. This caused problems with special hardware such as
CD-ROM jukeboxes which required more support than the Apple CD-ROM driver
had available. Versions before or after version 5.3.1 correctly work only
with Apple CD-ROM drives."

There since have been a couple of attempts to hack more recent Apple CD-ROM
drivers to make them more universal. In fact, one fellow had a little
utility that would hack the CD-ROM driver in Mac OS 9.0.4, but had to
withdraw the utility when Apple protested on copyright grounds.
But workarounds exist. See:

Warning, warning, Will Robinson: ResEdit link ahead. Not for feint of heart.
Do this only on backup copies of CD-ROM driver. Warning, warning:

But try Apple driver 5.3.1 first.
Good luck,
