>...connected at "an unknown rate" Lanny, the Earthlink folk are correct. All you need is a modem script better matched to your modem. A modem script is simply a text file with custom-made instructions sent to the modem upon negotiation and connection so that the modem performs at its best. When you go to your Modem control panel and click on the popup list, does anything in there resemble your unit? No? Try choosing 'GV 28.8-K56' if you have it or something close. Try all of the GV or Global Village choices, each time closing the control panel and saying Yes to save changes. A restart isn't necessary, but reconnecting is. I've never heard of a Global Village 33.6 Silver. There was a Global VillageTelePort Silver, way old and slow; not 33.6. Yours does say 33.6 somewhere on it? If you've got a 33.6K, I'd stick with it. The speed difference going to a 56K isn't great, and lots of people can't connect faster than 28.8 or 33.6 regardless of what type of modem they have. For more modem scripts to choose from look in the popup menu of your PowerBook's Modem control panel. Compare the list to what your other computer has in its list. Want one of scripts the PowerBook has? Open its Modem Scripts folder and put the script(s) in the other computer's Modem Scripts folder via floppy or Ethernet, etc. Rememer the Modem Scripts folders are in your respective Extensions folders. Again, restarting won't be necessary, nor is any trashing or moving of preferences. I also believe your AOL software isn't an issue. None of your Apple internet or networking software ever invokes any of the AOL software or preferences. They co-exsist peacefully. You might give the Global Village site another try. Lots of good stuff there. Now that Zoom has bought them from Boca Research, you can even get Global Village fax software for free! The various scripts aren't hidden--just confirm what model you have. But since any of the later MacOS versions already came with the Global Village scripts, if you don't already have it installed (but not chosen yet) it's in your PowerBook's selection. -David -- Power Computing is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... 123Inkjets.com <http://lowendmac.com/ad/123inkjets.html> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Power Computing list info: <http://lowendmac.com/power/list.html> Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> List archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/powercomputing%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Macintosh?
