It's on the logic board, just above (or was it below?) the processor card.
Easily identified, since it's marked on the logic board.  Can be a tough bugger
to get out as I remember, just be careful.

When I installed my G3/500 upgrade (Powerlogix), my PTP would not even boot
with the L2 in place.  On the directions that came with the card, they
recommended taking the L2 off to begin with, since most machines would not work
with it in place once the upgrade was installed, but also stated than if left
in place and did work, the computer would recognize it as an L3.  Sadly mine
didn't.....
