Actually, that was a little frustrating (speaking as a former Apple dealer), but,
at least then, Apple provided 30 days' price protection--a common practice among
computer vendors. Thus, if I just received an order and the following week the
prices went down, I could get credit for the difference.
As a customer, if you ever purchased a Mac and the price dropped shortly
thereafter, your dealer should credit you the difference if you ask, since the
credit ultimately does not come from their pocket.
