Last week I bought a Powerlogic Powerforce G3 400 card for my PowerTower
180e. The local used Mac dealer who sold it to me configured the dip
switches and told me to set the cache at 2:1. I installed it and started
getting freezes, increasing in frequency. The dealer thought it would be
my RAM and advised me to ditch a 64MB chip I had bought from MacWarehouse.
Eventually it was freezing during extension loading, so I brought it in to
the dealer. He kept it for a day and said he tried everything, including
leaving the L2 chip in for a change. He simply couldn't get it to work, so
he gave me my money back. He said that there must be something funky about
my motherboard. Of course, everything seems to work just fine with the
original 604e CPU back in.

I am pleased that the problems weren't caused by me doing something wrong
in the installation and even more pleased not to get stuck with a card that
doesn't work. On the other hand, it would be nice to be able to upgrade to
a G3. Doesn't anyone have any idea whether a Sonnet G3 might be more
stable? Or should I just stop messing around and thank the stars I still
have a computer that works at all?

Thanks.
Charles
