Hi Kim, I went the usb smartmedia/compactflash card reader way (smartmedia only could do, but if you are going to upgrade to a new digital camera in the future you will be able to use the whatever you buy, well Sony excluded, if you get the combo now).
If you will have to replace the cable from Apple you might end up spending more than buying a reader and a usb card, both of which might be useful in the future. Consider this option! I was very satisfied, faster transfers and the card appears like a drive on the desktop.
